Principal’s Welcome

Welcome to The Halley Academy

Our role here at The Halley is to inspire students and staff to learn and achieve more than they ever thought possible. Our core values: respect, achievement, collaboration, integrity and resilience permeate every aspect of the academy. The culture of our academy affects the character of students and staff alike, which in turn shapes the culture of our society. We develop globally minded young people who can lead fulfilled lives with direction and purpose, and who thrive in an ever changing world.

Our drive and excitement at The Halley is seen day-to-day, ensuring our students have every opportunity to be the best version of themselves. We want them to be successful in their chosen careers, in their relationships and in their interaction with the world. Safeguarding is of paramount importance at the academy and our students are happy, safe and successful in our care.

Our teachers lead with professionalism and scholarship; they are experts in their field. All of us are part of a warm and caring family of staff, Governors and Trust colleagues who have the highest ambition and a deep hunger to learn. Our staff receives regular, first-class training to achieve mastery of their craft, amazing support to flourish every day, and a sense of shared moral purpose about the best job in the world.

Our ambitious world-class curriculum delivers an education of excellence for all, through consistently highly effective teaching and a culture of relentless high expectations for our students. The Halley Academy has been an International Baccalaureate World School since 2019. We believe passionately in the mastery of the core within a broad, balanced and coherent curriculum that develops the whole child holistically. The curriculum is shaped by, and deeply rooted in, the strongest available evidence about how students learn and retain knowledge. We are committed to students engaging deeply and comprehensively with both substantive and disciplinary knowledge so that they achieve strong outcomes throughout each phase of the curriculum: the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Years 7, 8 and 9; a two year Key Stage 4 where students study a range of GCSE and vocational qualifications in Years 10 and 11; and the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme (IBCP) in our Sixth Form.

The academy has experienced unprecedented investment and refurbishment as part of joining Leigh Academies Trust, providing excellent learning facilities in an historic listed building. All students at The Halley Academy are given access to a personal Chromebook, which they use every day in lessons and at home, to support their learning and all teaching staff have Google Educator certification. With considerable investment from the Tallow Chandlers Livery Company, our brand new Engineering and Design Centre, opening in June 2022, supports the development of our thriving STEM specialism. Students and staff benefit from a modern sports complex on our 16 acre site and a number of cutting edge science laboratories.

At The Halley Academy students join one of the three small school communities, each with a team of staff, dedicated to helping them reach their full potential. The small school communities are vertical and have students in tutor groups according to their year group; allocation is not determined by academic performance. Students form a strong relationship with their tutor as a first point of contact. Students meet their tutors every day and there is a well planned programme for tutor time which includes assemblies, housekeeping, values and sex and relationships education alongside a well structured careers, advice and guidance scheme. The entire academy community, including the sixth form, has regular whole academy assemblies to share whole academy messages and values. Students’ personal development is also promoted through amazing life experiences which are part of a wide range of enriching extracurricular clubs, cultural activities and our Values curriculum.

We are a community where our young people learn how to be confident, articulate, learning-focused and successful. Our student leadership programmes encourage students to practise these skills through leading activities both within and beyond the academy. We maximise opportunities for learning outside of the classroom through trips, visits, innovation experiences and career guidance that opens our students’ minds to the possibilities and opportunities available to them within the local, national and global community. Our Academy farm, with its bees and chickens, has a special place in Halley hearts. This unique facility allows students to understand nature, the environment, animal care and horticulture.

The Halley Academy equips students with the knowledge, skills and experiences so that they can play an active and informed role in modern 21st Century Britain. We provide outstanding academic support and pastoral guidance, so that students can lead fulfilling and successful adult lives: inquisitive, articulate and internationally engaged, our students are defined by their boundless thirst for knowledge, self-improvement and learning.
